Shopify Q3 Revenue and GMV Miss Sends Shares Lower

Shopify Q3 earnings, released Tuesday, November 3, showed revenue of $3.74 billion, up 32% year over year, while adjusted earnings of $0.49 a share beat several consensus figures. Shares still fell after gross merchandise volume and subscription metrics came in short of some Wall Street estimates. For merchants, the quarter still describes growing sales; the selloff describes a stock priced for a cleaner beat.

Key Takeaways

  • Adjusted EPS of $0.49 beat; revenue was $3.74 billion, up 32%.
  • GMV of $119.15 billion and $836 million in subscriptions missed estimates.
  • Free cash flow margin was 22%; Q4 revenue guide is a low-thirties rate.
  • Shares fell as much as 13.2% with the stock at 99 times earnings.

Shopify Q3 Earnings Against the Estimates

The Ottawa-based company reported for the quarter ended September 30. CNBC said $3.74 billion of revenue was just under an LSEG estimate of $3.75 billion. The Globe and Mail recorded US$3.742 billion versus a US$3.744 billion S&P Global consensus, up 31.5%. Yahoo Finance, citing Bloomberg, called it the first revenue miss since 2022.

Gross merchandise volume was $119.15 billion, short of StreetAccount’s $120.03 billion and the $120.08 billion cited by Yahoo Finance. The Globe and Mail said GMV rose 29.5%, European clients grew particularly fast, and the United States remained the largest market.

Subscription revenue of $836 million missed FactSet’s $848.1 million and the $850.2 million cited by Yahoo Finance. Subscription gross profit of $661 million was nearly $20 million below StreetAccount’s $680.3 million. CNBC said merchant revenue and merchant gross profit beat.

Metric Q3 result Estimate
Revenue $3.74 billion $3.75 billion (LSEG)
Adjusted EPS $0.49 $0.46 (LSEG)
Gross merchandise volume $119.15 billion $120.03 billion (StreetAccount)
Subscription revenue $836 million $848.1 million (FactSet)
Subscription gross profit $661 million $680.3 million (StreetAccount)

Adjusted EPS of $0.49 topped LSEG’s 46-cent estimate, the 48-cent figure cited by Yahoo Finance, and analysts’ consensus of $0.46 reported by The Motley Fool. Using a $3.73 billion revenue consensus, The Motley Fool called revenue a beat and said adjusted EPS rose 44%. It also reported monthly recurring revenue of $230 million, up 19%.

Why Shares Fell After 32% Growth

Reported moves depended on the timestamp. Shares opened down 12.8% at US$136.21, The Globe and Mail said, and fell as much as 13.2%, The Motley Fool said. CNBC reported an 8.74% decline; Yahoo Finance said the stock plunged 7%. At 99 times earnings, versus a three-year average multiple of 169, The Motley Fool said investors were more likely to nitpick.

President Harley Finkelstein told CNBC’s Squawk on the Street that GMV was “consistent” and “durable,” and that it was the 13th consecutive quarter of GMV growth above 20%. “We’re really proud of the print, and we’re going to keep building for the long term and ignore the noise day to day,” he said.

In Shopify’s earnings release, CFO Jeff Hoffmeister said, “Delivering these results at our scale speaks to the strength of our model, our multiple growth drivers, and our expanding addressable market.” The Globe and Mail quoted Kevin Krishnaratne of Bank of Nova Scotia, who wrote that “Expectations were high,” and treated increased payments-processing use and free cash flow as positive signals. Much of Shopify’s revenue is fees on client sales, including payments, shipping and lending.

Agentic Shopping and Sidekick Costs

Meta released the consumer agent Muse during the quarter, and Shopify was an early partner. Muse can browse and purchase on Shopify inside the Muse app and check out with Shop Pay. The Globe and Mail said Shopify is also enabling Anthropic’s Claude Duet and Instinct to browse and buy.

Finkelstein said volume is still small, but AI traffic more than doubled year over year and automated orders rose more than three-fold. Major retailers such as Amazon have blocked agents, citing privacy and security risks. Shopify built a shared catalog and supplies current inventory and pricing.

“For merchants, this means reach – a huge new pool of customers with zero lift for them,” Finkelstein said, The Globe and Mail reported. He told CNBC, “We’re not seeing that prices are being lowered.”

Daily use of Sidekick, which helps merchants set up and run stores, rose nearly four-fold from a year ago. Hoffmeister said that development and wider use have lowered subscription-sales margins. Agent-driven orders remain a small base.

What Merchants Should Read in the Q4 Guide

Q4 is typically Shopify’s largest quarter, driven by Black Friday, Cyber Monday and holiday shopping. For Q4 2026, Shopify expects:

  • Revenue growth at a low-thirties percentage rate year over year
  • Gross profit dollars growing at a high-twenties percentage rate
  • Operating expenses at 29% to 30% of revenue
  • Stock-based compensation of $155 million
  • Free cash flow margin consistent with the fourth quarter of 2025

CNBC compared the revenue outlook with an LSEG estimate of 32.1%. The Globe and Mail said the low-30s guide was slightly above consensus. Shopify said free cash flow margin should be consistent with the fourth quarter of 2025. The Motley Fool said the margin should be similar to last year’s rate of about 19%.

Finkelstein acknowledged some economic pressure on consumers but said businesses are optimistic. “I do think this is the first holiday season where AI-assisted shopping capabilities will become mainstream, especially with the rise of personal agents,” he told CNBC.

New customers cited on the call included Pierre Balmain, Estée Lauder’s Clinique line and Lululemon. Shopify says millions of businesses in 175+ countries use the platform. GMV is still growing at about 29% to 29.5%, and the guide does not signal a sharp slowdown. Consumer pressure is the holiday risk he flagged, the same caution in confidence readings as spending plans soften, and the share move looks more like quarters where AI spending overshadowed strong cloud growth than a break in merchant demand.
